Alan Sergeev

I am delighted to be the owner of two beautiful rats! Look at how cute they are! I love them very much.

I have many interests and hobbies that I engage in in my spare time. I enjoy setting myself hands-on / crafting projects in new areas to me - a few recent ones have been rescaping my garden, soldering a faux neon sign, sculpting custom presence tokens for my favourite board game (Spirit Island!), and writing a play! I also enjoy bouldering.

I am a PhD student in Combinatorics at the University of Bimringham, supervised by Nikolaos Fountoulakis, and co-supervised by Allan Lo.

My current area of interest can most accurately be described as "non-monotone processes on random graphs", but my general interests in combinatorics are quite broad. I particularly enjoy structural and extremal combinatorics, am a huge fan of Ramsey theory, and generally thrive in probabilistic environments.

I completed my undergraduate studies reading mathematics at the University of Cambridge, including the Part III course as part of the Integrated Master's programme.

Teaching and Community Work!

I have supervised the Part II Graph Theory course at the University of Cambridge every year since Michaelmas 2024. I enjoy supervising this course a lot!

In the 2025-2026 academic year, I was a teaching assistant for the Randomness & Computation course at the University of Birmingham, which is a third year mathematics course, and also available to Master's and PhD students. I also gave two official lectures for this course, which was an extremely exciting and rewarding experience!

In the 2024-2025 academic year, I was a teaching assistant for several first year courses at the University of Birmingham.

I was an organiser for the British Early Career Mathematicians' Colloquium 2025

I have tutored GCSE and A-level students in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, specialising in preparing students for olympiads in these respective subjects. Additionally I have held short workshops at secondary schools to introduce keen young mathematicians to Combinatorics, and am interested in doing so again. I also have several maths talks prepared for secondary school audiences, and greatly enjoy giving talks for school maths societies on a variety of topics, so please get in touch with me if this is of interest to you :)

I have also mentored queer mathematicians in their adjustment from undergraduate to postgraduate level studies, including help with PhD applications, but also just informal chats about future prospects, etc. If you are queer and are curious about the prospect of academia (or just want to chat!), feel free to get in touch with me! :)
